isn’t until the very next scene that because
of this, her life duties that day were delayed
(once again apparently) to the dismay of her
fellow sisters at the nunnery. They’re
apparently distraught with their self imposed
conundrum of the almost riddle like question
of “how do you solve a problem like
Maria?” The ‘problem’ of Maria,
according to the nuns, is she sees the beauty
of the world and lets it guide her to become
evangelical about that beauty, even if it
means doing it when she’s supposed to remain
silent. It wasn’t until her one on one with
one nun that’s basically telling her she’s
not a good fit for their organization. She is,
for all intents and purposes, an anomaly
within their dogmatic practices & clockwork
piety. Maria confesses, I’m not sure if
it’s considered a sin to them or just
frowned upon, her action of celebrating, what
she says was beyond her power to control, the
overwhelming enchantment of being in the
hills. It just happened, and, despite the
consequences, she let it happen, with no one
around. She fights the suggestion that she
should leave the world of the nuns, and pleads
to remain the most beautiful bird in the cage
of the house of god. To delay action against
her, they send her on an assignment to become
governess to seven children.
