Julie Andrews, Mary Poppins, & the Maria
Kutschera A look into three facets of the same
thing: pure innocence, unwavering sovereignty,
and the strength of one person in the midst of
many forms of oppression Not until this past
weekend had I ever noticed that Julie Andrews
had played both the very real Maria Augusta
Kutschera as well as the fictional character
of Mary Poppins. Never had I realized how
similar both characters are or even the
similarities between the Disney film and The
Sound of Music, so much the same yet so very
different. To open the play with the phrase:
‘the hills are alive with the sound of
music’ being belted out, while submerged
within what some call the sprawling beauty of
the lord’s splendor, is a layered display of
four concentric circles of beauty: Maria’s
heart & mind, her physical form, her voice,
and the background of landscapes laden with
the myriad of colors realized by the flowers
and the green grass of nature and life itself.
It was a declaration she couldn’t contain
within herself and she reacts accordingly,
becoming apart of that beauty herself &
amplifying it exponentially.
